Texas bluebonnet (Lupinus texensis)
Lupinus texensis, also known as Texas Bluebonnet, is a species of lupine that is native to parts of Texas, Arkansas and Louisiana. This beauty has larger, more sharply pointed leaves and more numerous flower heads than other similar lupines. These plants are topped by clusters of up to 50 beautiful blue, pea-like flowers. Once established, lupines in general are very low maintenance and will make a perfect addition to your garden! Texas Bluebonnet does best in sandy, dry, well-drained soil and even though they adapt easily to various conditions they thrive in full sun and do not like clay or poor draining soil. These flowers usually bloom in early to late spring and are an important food source for both bees and butterflies. Do keep in mind that most lupines are toxic if ingested for humans and animals alike.
